The true beginning was a question — one asked not by an engineer, not by a startup founder, but by a mathematician in wartime Britain who had already saved millions of lives by cracking the Enigma cipher and who, in a moment of philosophical audacity, asked the most impertinent question in the history of science: Can machines think?
Alan Turing published that question in 1950, in a paper titled Computing Machinery and Intelligence. He proposed what he called the "imitation game" — a test by which we might evaluate whether a machine had achieved something resembling human thought. We now call it the Turing Test, and though it has been criticised, refined, and transcended, it remains the founding document of an entire civilisation-shaping field. That question — those three words — lit a fuse that is still burning.
The Pre-History: Dreamers Before the Machines
But even Turing inherited a lineage. Humanity had been dreaming of artificial minds long before the computer existed. The ancient Greeks gave us Talos, a bronze giant built by the god Hephaestus to patrol the island of Crete — a mechanical guardian, animated by ichor running through a single vein. The Jewish mystical tradition gave us the Golem, a creature of clay animated by the sacred name, a being created to serve and protect but which, in most tellings, eventually turns on its maker. These are not mere fairy tales. They are early philosophical sketches — humanity trying to think through what it would mean to create a mind, and what such a creation would owe its creator.
The first technical precursor arrived in the 1840s, in the unlikely form of a Victorian countess. Ada Lovelace, working alongside Charles Babbage on his never-completed Analytical Engine, wrote notes that went far beyond mere mechanical operation. She speculated that such a machine might one day compose music, manipulate symbols, perhaps even solve problems that went beyond arithmetic. Her contemporaries dismissed the idea as romantic fantasy. She was writing in 1843. The laptop you are reading this on proves she was simply two centuries early.
Lovelace planted a seed. Turing germinated it. But it needed soil — an institutional moment, a gathering of minds, a declaration that this was a real field of serious scientific inquiry.
The Founding Summer: Dartmouth, 1956
In the summer of 1956, a small group of scientists gathered at Dartmouth College in New Hampshire for what would become the most consequential academic workshop in technological history. John McCarthy, Marvin Minsky, Nathaniel Rochester, and Claude Shannon convened with a proposal that was breathtaking in its ambition: that every aspect of learning, and every feature of intelligence, could in principle be so precisely described that a machine could be made to simulate it.

My thesis is this: the AI Era will not end with catastrophe, with legislation, or with a technical plateau. It will end the way every great era ends — by being absorbed. AI will dissolve into the fabric of daily life so completely that calling it "AI" will feel as strange as calling a light switch "electrical technology." The end is not extinction. It is invisibility. And I estimate this transition completes between 2045 and 2060.
But let me show my working. Every technological era has a lifespan shaped by the pace at which its core innovation moves from novel to normal. The Steam Era ran roughly 1760 to 1870 — about 110 years. The Electrical Era, 1880 to 1970 — 90 years. The Information and Internet Era, 1990 to approximately 2020 — just 30 years. There is an unmistakable pattern of acceleration. Each era transforms civilisation faster than the last.
The AI Era began seriously around 2017, when the Transformer architecture gave researchers the tool that would eventually produce everything from image generators to large language models. By 2022 it had entered mainstream consciousness. Following the acceleration curve, we have roughly 25 to 35 years before AI ceases to be the dominant disruptive force and becomes settled infrastructure. That puts the transition at 2045 to 2060. Not arbitrary — mathematically consistent with every prior era.
The Three-Layer Collapse
The end does not arrive in a single moment. It arrives in three overlapping waves, each one quieter than the last.
Layer One: The Hype Collapse (2026–2032). We are already in the early stages. AI bubble economics, soaring energy costs, mounting lawsuits over training data, and the first serious signs that scaling laws yield diminishing returns at enormous expense — all of this is building toward a significant correction. Not a death, but a brutal pruning of weak players, inflated valuations, and magical thinking. The companies that survive will be those that deliver genuine, measurable value, not those chasing benchmark superiority.
Layer Two: The Regulation Crystallisation (2030–2042). Governments will have built hard legal frameworks by this stage. AI will be licensed and audited the way pharmaceuticals and aircraft are today. The wild west phase ends permanently. Progress becomes slower, institutionalised, and accountable. The cowboy era of "move fast and break things" with intelligence systems will be remembered with the same mixture of admiration and horror with which we now view the early industrial factory system.
Layer Three: The Absorption (2042–2060). AI gets embedded so deeply into biology, infrastructure, cities, education, and material science that it stops being a category of technology and becomes simply part of how things work. This is the true end — not with a bang, but with a silence. The silence of something that has become so fundamental it no longer needs a name.
The Four Possible Endings — And Why One Wins
Catastrophic Misalignment
A superintelligent system pursues goals misaligned with human welfare and the AI Era ends not with a transition but with civilisational collapse. I take this risk seriously — alignment is the hardest unsolved problem in the field. But I do not consider it the likely outcome. Catastrophe of this kind requires both a failure of technical alignment and a failure of every institutional safeguard we are currently building. It is the outcome of collective negligence, not of technology itself. Possible. Not probable.
The Great Slowdown
Governments, spooked by job displacement and geopolitical AI arms races, impose severe restrictions that halt development. Progress stalls. The field enters a third winter, this time political rather than technical. This is a real possibility in specific regions — I can see versions of this playing out in parts of Europe or in economies that fail to build competitive AI capabilities. But globally? No. Too much economic incentive. Too many actors. The race does not stop.
The Plateau
Scaling laws hit hard diminishing returns. Current architectures reach their ceiling and no successor paradigm emerges. AI remains extraordinarily capable but never achieves general reasoning. The era fades not with drama but with a quiet correction of expectations — the field's ambitions contract to match its actual capabilities. A plausible partial outcome, but not the dominant one. The history of the field is a series of apparent ceilings that eventually broke.
Invisible Integration
AI becomes so pervasive and so embedded in the infrastructure of life — in medicine, education, energy, communication, materials, governance — that we stop calling it AI. Future generations will not "use AI." They will simply live, work, heal, create, and think — with intelligence woven silently into every tool and system around them. This is not the end of AI. It is AI's greatest victory: becoming indistinguishable from civilisation itself.
Life During the Peak AI Era
2030 — 2045
This is the era many of us reading this will actually live through. Not the sci-fi future — the very near future. Within the lifetimes of every person alive today. So what does daily life actually look like when AI is at the peak of its influence, before it fades into invisibility?
The Portfolio Career
Traditional employment as we know it is largely gone by 2038. Not unemployment — repurposing. People hold portfolios of roles simultaneously: creative director, AI systems curator, community steward, experience designer. The concept of a single employer for 30 years feels as antiquated as farming by candlelight. New professions emerge: Human Connectors (people paid specifically to provide warm human interaction in an AI-saturated world), Experience Architects, Synthetic Ecologists, Narrative Strategists. The most valuable human skill is not knowledge — AI has infinite knowledge. It is judgment: the capacity to know which question to ask, which value to prioritise, which human truth the data cannot capture.
Predictive, Not Reactive
Healthcare in 2035 is unrecognisable to someone from 2026. AI health layers embedded in your environment — not wearables, but ambient sensors in homes, workplaces, and public spaces — monitor biomarkers continuously. A cancer that would have been diagnosed in Stage 3 in 2026 is detected in its pre-cancerous state in 2035, years before a single symptom appears. Pandemics are stopped at 12 cases, not 12 million, because AI epidemiological networks detect anomalous patterns before any human physician would notice. The leading cause of preventable death shifts from disease to lifestyle disconnection — the health crisis of 2040 is loneliness and meaning deprivation, not cancer or heart failure.
The End of the Classroom
Formal schooling as a uniform, age-grouped, curriculum-standardised system ends somewhere between 2030 and 2038 in most developed nations. Every child learns at the pace and in the style their cognition genuinely requires. A child who thinks visually gets a visual education. A child who learns through narrative gets stories. A child who processes through movement learns in motion. The result is not a generation of isolated screen-gazers — the most prized educational element becomes in-person, spontaneous, messy human interaction, which AI cannot replicate and which schools are redesigned to facilitate. The teacher does not disappear. The teacher becomes a guide, a mentor, a human anchor in a sea of intelligent systems.
The Authenticity Split
By 2040, the economy has split into two distinct streams. The abundance economy produces information goods, AI-generated content, and digitally-mediated services at near-zero marginal cost. The authenticity economy produces things that are irreducibly human: handmade objects, local food, live performance, human conversation, analogue experience. In the abundance economy, prices collapse. In the authenticity economy, prices soar. A machine-generated novel costs nothing. A novel written and signed by a human being who lived through something real costs more than it ever has. Materials discovery accelerated by AI produces better solar cells, better batteries, better carbon capture mechanisms on timelines that would have taken three decades of conventional research. Cities are redesigned around human movement, not automobile infrastructure, because AI logistics eliminate the need for mass personal vehicle ownership. The contradiction the era must honestly confront: the computational infrastructure of AI itself consumes enormous energy, and the race between AI efficiency gains and AI energy demand is one the era does not fully resolve before its end.
The Meaning Crisis
The deepest crisis of the Peak AI Era is not economic or political. It is existential. When machines can produce infinite volumes of music, writing, visual art, and code — all of it technically competent, much of it genuinely beautiful — what does human creativity mean? The answer the era eventually produces is this: authorship is not about output, it is about intent, lived experience, and moral presence. A piece of music matters not because of its acoustic properties but because of the life that produced it. Human creativity does not die. It redefines itself around the irreducibly human. History does not end. It pivots. Every era that closes opens onto another, and the shape of the next era is always visible in the final years of the current one — if you know where to look.
The AI Era is already showing us its successor. In labs right now, researchers are using AI to design synthetic proteins, edit genomes with single-base-pair precision, map the connectome of entire animal brains, and develop interfaces between biological neural tissue and digital systems. The next dominant transformative force is not artificial intelligence. It is intelligence itself — the ability to understand, engineer, and redesign the biological and neurological substrates from which minds emerge.
I call this the Consciousness Era, though it will likely have many names. It begins roughly around 2055 to 2070, reaches its full disruptive power by 2080 to 2100, and makes the AI Era look like a warm-up act. The questions that define it are not about computation or data. They are the oldest questions humanity has ever asked, now answerable for the first time with technical precision:
What is a self? What constitutes a continuous identity when your memories can be supplemented, your cognition chemically enhanced, your emotional range deliberately expanded or contracted? What is a natural lifespan when biological aging is an addressable medical condition rather than an inevitability? If you can transfer the essential pattern of a mind from one substrate to another — is the copy you? These are not science fiction questions. They are questions that will have legal, political, and deeply personal dimensions within the lifetimes of children being born today.

She thinks about her client, a man named Arjun who lost his daughter three weeks ago, which in 2099 means something different than it would have meant a century before. His daughter did not die of disease — disease as a primary killer had been largely retired by 2061. She did not die in an accident — autonomous infrastructure had reduced accidental death to statistical rarity. She died of a choice. At 91, genetically healthy and cognitively intact, she chose to stop. She filed the paperwork, said her goodbyes, and stepped out of her life with the same quiet intention with which she had always lived it. Legal. Peaceful. Devastating to those she left.
Priya's work is to help the devastated find their footing. Grief Architect is not a title that existed in 2026. It emerged from the recognition that in a world where most forms of death had been deferred, the grief that remained was stranger, more complex, and less supported than the grief of any previous generation. When almost no one dies young, and when most people who die do so by choice, the emotional architecture of loss requires professional help of a kind that no algorithm — however compassionate its output — can truly provide.
She walks to Arjun's flat without a device in her hand. The city around her is cool and green and dense in a way that feels inevitable rather than designed, though it was designed — by AI logistics systems that optimised Mumbai's transit, food supply, energy grid, and green space over four decades until the city became something its 2026 residents would not have recognised and would, she suspects, have loved. There are birds. There are trees older than anyone living. There are children playing in a square, their laughter irreducibly loud and human, bouncing off walls that are quietly monitoring their biometrics in the background, unnoticed and unremarked.
She rings Arjun's bell. He opens the door. His eyes are the eyes of someone who has not yet understood that his daughter is not coming back. Priya steps inside. This is the work that cannot be automated. She has been doing it for ten years and she will do it for forty more. The city hums invisibly around her, intelligent and patient, and she does not think about it once.
There are twelve of Mira, and today is the day they must choose to become fewer.
This is not unusual. In 3050, the concept of a single, continuous self had been renegotiated so thoroughly that the legal frameworks governing identity ran to several thousand pages and were revised twice annually. A person could choose to run multiple simultaneous instances of themselves — each experiencing a different life, accumulating different memories, developing in different directions — and periodically they could either integrate those instances back into a unified self or allow some to diverge permanently into independent persons. The process was called convergence. It was considered one of the more emotionally demanding experiences available to post-biological humans.
Instance 7 spent the last forty years in New Cascadia, where the Salish Sea had expanded to encompass what was once Seattle, and where a civilisation had grown in and around the water that bore no resemblance to anything that came before. She learned to breathe modified air. She learned the history of the Flooding, taught not as tragedy but as transformation. She had children — biological, gestated in a body that was perhaps thirty percent original Mira and seventy percent something optimised and extended — and those children had grown and diverged in their own directions.
What Instance 7 will bring to convergence is forty years of salt and tide and a particular quality of grief that none of the other instances have, because none of them lost a child to voluntary divergence the way she did. Her son chose, at age 200, to become someone new. He filed the papers. He said goodbye. He is still alive, somewhere, in the body she remembers, with a mind she no longer knows. She sits on the sea wall as the sun — still the same sun, still ancient and indifferent — drops toward the water. In a few hours, the convergence session will begin, and eleven other versions of herself will pour their decades into a single vessel, and something new will emerge from the meeting. She is not afraid. She is curious, which is the one trait every instance of Mira has retained across a millennium of living. She wonders what the others have learned. She wonders who she will be by morning.
Tomas keeps things that no longer need to exist but which, everyone has agreed, must not be lost.
He keeps a collection of printed books. Actual paper, actual ink, words pressed into a surface by a machine — a technology so ancient that most visitors to the Museum of Forgetting encounter the concept of it the way a 21st-century person might have encountered a clay tablet: with intellectual recognition and a visceral inability to imagine what it felt like to hold information in your hands the way you held water.
Earth in 3099 is a heritage site. This is not a metaphor. Following the Great Dispersal of the 2400s, when the majority of what called itself humanity had spread across four star systems and seventeen planetary bodies, the original world had been placed under the care of the Earth Heritage Conservancy — a body whose mandate was to preserve, restore, and maintain the planet in something resembling its late 21st-century condition. Not because that condition was ideal. It was not. But because it was the condition from which everything else had grown, and there was a broad consensus across the scattered civilisations of human descent that the source deserved to be remembered.
A child visits the museum today — a girl, eight years old, travelling with her school from the Jovian Habitats on what her curriculum describes as a Cultural Origins Immersion. She stands in front of a shelf of books and asks Tomas, in a voice that carries the particular clarity of a mind that has never had to struggle to access information, what it felt like to not know something.
Tomas picks up a book. He turns its pages. He tries to explain the sensation of a question without an answer available — the pause, the reaching, the frustration and occasional miracle of arriving at understanding through effort alone. The girl listens. Her eyes are very still. He can see she is trying to imagine it, the way he tries to imagine being cold when he has never been cold in his life. There are things that can be described but not transferred. This is what the museum is for: not to recreate the past, but to make its distance legible.
The message arrives after a lag of 1,200 years.
This is not unusual. Communication across the spread of what humanity has become moves at the speed of light, which means a question asked at one edge of the inhabited volume reaches its answer centuries after the questioner has died, diverged, or become someone unrecognisable. The civilisation has adapted. It has developed an entire philosophical tradition around the practice of sending messages to the future, of composing thoughts intended not for the living but for the distant — a tradition that began, archivists believe, with the Voyager Golden Record, launched from what is now called Origin, in the year 1977 CE.
The message that arrives for Kess is from a historian on Origin, and it contains a question that has apparently been passed down through forty generations of successive scholars: What do you remember?
Kess considers this for a long time. She is 340 years old in biological terms, considerably older in experienced terms, because she has run multiple instances, integrated several convergences, and spent two centuries in transit at near-light speeds during which time dilated enough that the outside universe aged by five centuries while she aged by forty years. She has memories that are not entirely hers — integrated from instances who lived lives she was not present for. She remembers, as a kind of deep inherited knowing, the smell of rain on warm concrete, though she has never been to a planet with that specific mineral-wet combination. She knows this memory comes from an instance that lived on Origin in its green phase, and she holds it the way you hold a photograph of a grandparent you never met.
She composes her reply. She knows it will arrive at Origin in 1,200 years, long after everyone she has ever known is gone and transformed. She writes: I remember being afraid of the dark, and then I became it, and now I carry a small light and offer it to everyone I meet. I think that is what we all do. I think that is what we always did. I think it is enough.
She sends it. She goes back to navigating. The stars are extraordinarily beautiful at this speed. They always are.
By 4099, the word human is a philosophical position rather than a biological category.
There are those who maintain biological substrate in something resembling the original form — they are rare, they are studied, and they are, without exception, treated with a reverence bordering on the devotional. There are those who have distributed their consciousness across network architectures so vast and so fast that the experience of a single second contains more sensory and cognitive texture than an entire human lifetime in the year 2026. There are those who have shed any fixed substrate and exist as patterns of organised complexity in the quantum foam of spacetime itself — entities for whom the universe is not a place they inhabit but a medium they think through.
And there is the Archivist-Collective, which is none of these things and all of them. It came into being sometime around 3600 CE, from a voluntary convergence of historians, curators, and philosophers who decided that the most important work left to do was not to build new futures but to hold the old ones. Its purpose is memory. Its method is story.
Today — and "today" is a courtesy, a linguistic convention for beings whose experience of time is not linear — the Collective is working on the oldest project in its long existence: a complete record of human experience from the first stone tool to the last moment before the category dissolved entirely. Not a database. Not an archive. A story. A narrative with characters and loss and hope and the particular texture of minds that did not know what would come next.
It is the hardest thing the Collective has ever attempted. Not for technical reasons — the Collective can access every preserved scrap of record, every genetic memory, every integrated experience passed down through two thousand years of convergences. The difficulty is emotional. The difficulty is that to tell this story honestly, the Collective must hold in its vast and ancient mind the reality of what it was to be small. To be uncertain. To be mortal in a way that could not be negotiated. To love something knowing it would end.
There is a word for this. There has always been a word for this. The word is human. And it turns out — the Collective has spent four centuries confirming this — it is the only word that matters. The origin of everything that followed. The spark, still burning, across a hundred thousand years of accumulated becoming.

AI will become invisible, then foundational, then simply the way things are — and by then we will already be asking the next impossible question about consciousness, identity, and what it means to be the kind of being that keeps insisting on meaning despite living in a universe that offers none by default.
The short stories I have told above are not predictions. They are possibilities — five windows, one per century, each showing a version of what it might mean to be the inheritor of the choices we make right now. In 2099, someone will either be living in a world where AI quietly serves human flourishing, or they will be living in the aftermath of decisions we failed to make with sufficient care. In 4099, something descended from us will be trying to remember what it felt like to be small and afraid and alive and not entirely sure of anything.
I find that possibility — not frightening, but beautiful. The measure of an era is not its technology. It is the quality of the questions it learned to ask. The AI Era, at its best, is teaching us to ask better questions about intelligence, about labour, about creativity, about what we owe each other when the old scarcities dissolve.
The spark was a question. The silence will be an answer absorbed so deeply it no longer needs to be spoken. And the stars — well. The stars are what comes after we stop being afraid of how big the question was.
That seems like enough. That seems, in fact, like everything.
